In a landmark moment for KwaZulu-Natal’s economic development and international positioning, the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) successfully hosted a high-profile signing ceremony on Monday, 28 July 2025, to mark its official entry into the prestigious World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) network.
The ceremony, held at the Durban ICC, brought together an esteemed gathering of dignitaries including representatives of eThekwini Municipality, members of the Durban ICC Board, leaders from provincial government, business stakeholders and a visiting delegation from the WTCA, led by Executive Director of Business Development, Mr Robin van Puyenbroeck.
The signing marks the formal establishment of the World Trade Center Durban — a commercial hub that will facilitate international trade, investment promotion, business networking, and sustainable economic growth in Durban and the wider African continent.
Speaking at the ceremony, Durban ICC Chief Executive Officer, Ms Lindiwe Rakharebe hailed the moment as “the manifestation of a bold vision backed by courage, collaboration, and commitment.” She continued, “The World Trade Center brand brings with it global prestige, unparalleled access to international business networks, and the ability to position Durban as a serious player on the world stage.”
Dr Mduduzi Bophela, Board Chairperson of the Durban ICC, delivered the welcome address and underscored the Centre’s longstanding commitment to innovation, inclusive economic growth, and excellence in service delivery. “Today, we are not just celebrating a contract or an agreement – we are celebrating a vision” he noted. “A vision that connects our local businesses with global opportunities; a vision that fosters trade, innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development. And most importantly, a vision that reflects our city’s boundless potential and unwavering resilience.”
Mr van Puyenbroeck of the WTCA expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, noting, “We are proud to welcome Durban to our global family of over 300 World Trade Centers across nearly 100 countries. WTC Durban is uniquely positioned to serve as a gateway for African trade and innovation, and we look forward to supporting its development and global integration.”
The establishment of World Trade Center Durban is aligned with key priorities of the eThekwini Municipality’s Growth and Development Strategy (Shape Durban) and supports national objectives outlined in South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2030, including job creation, export growth, and the advancement of SMMEs.
As part of its rollout plan, WTC Durban will provide services such as international trade missions, business matchmaking events, trade exhibitions, business incubation for SMMEs, and access to a global network of trade and investment opportunities. In the short term, operations will be based at the Durban ICC while feasibility studies and plans for the permanent WTC site are finalised.
Representing eThekwini Municipality, and Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Cllr Thembo Ntuli praised the Durban ICC for its leadership and foresight, stating, “This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision of becoming a gateway to Africa and a leading global hub for trade and investment. We are confident that the license will enhance Durban’s global competitiveness which will help us attract foreign direct investment across diverse sectors.”
The signing ceremony was followed by a networking reception, where stakeholders discussed the next steps in the rollout of the WTC Durban initiative.
